Student Funding Opportunities
OUR has funding opportunities for students to receive a stipend for doing full-time undergraduate research. The STAR and BURST programs are for experienced and new research students. Additional programs like the Beckman Scholars Program, the McNair Scholars Program, and the Keck Humanities Resarch Fellows Program are affiliated with OUR.
OUR also provides travel awards to help students present their research at conferences.
We encourage you to come to the Office of Undergraduate Research in Maher 252 for office hours during the academic year to learn more about getting involved in undergraduate research.
Other Funding Opportunities
Associated Students (AS) Academic Grants
Each semester, A.S.G. offers $25,000 to all undergraduate students to fund research projects. The A.S.G. Academic Grant Selection Board reviews each grant application and determines what impresses and what concerns them about each project. The board identifies the project’s ability to advance knowledge in the area of study, feasibility, and alignment with the University’s mission and the Changemaker initiative.
Research Grant
The A.S.G Research Grant offers funding for most materials requested for a research project. Some examples of items funded in the past are chemicals, lumber materials, conference registration fees, survey incentives, and books. In order to receive maximum funding, we recommend that you do extensive research and find the most affordable option available before compiling your budget. Projects from all fields of study will be judged equally; this grant often funds research projects in the fields of science, engineering, psychology, and communications.
Funding is available for student projects that display innovation and creativity while furthering the student’s technique and knowledge in their field of study. All students are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to students studying the arts such as projects on art, humanities, architecture, or history.

Career Development Center Summer Internship Award
The Summer Internship Award supports eligible undergraduate USD students participating in meaningful summer internships, undergraduate research, or career-related community service. The intent of the award is to enable students to participate in summer experiences that they could not otherwise afford. Historically, awards are granted to students whose experiences are unpaid or low paid, and/or who are experiencing financial need.
The award is not a replacement for wages but rather is intended to offset living, transportation, or other expenses associated with participating in a summer internship. Students granted this award are eligible to receive up to $3,000 that will be disbursed in three payments.
Please visit the Summer Internship Award page for more information.
