Welcome, New Toreros!
As part of the University of San Diego's commitment to the well-being of our individual students and to the larger USD community, all USD students are required to complete an online education course series on an annual basis. These interactive, two-part courses are designed to help you think about how you will contribute to a welcoming and thriving community. Together, these courses will empower you to make well-informed decisions and to know how to support yourself and your peers. Please review the below information for some background on the three required courses for new first-year and transfer undergraduate students:
Required Training:
- Hazing Awareness and Prevention
- AlcoholEdu for College
- RespectEdu for College Students (California)
- Building a Welcoming Community for Students
Beginning the 2026–2027 academic year, all courses will be available on Canvas! Canvas offers a more intuitive, user-friendly platform designed to enhance your teaching and learning experience.
Important Course Dates for Fall 2026 New Undergraduates
- Mid-July: courses available in Canvas
- August 24, 2026: course deadline
We will be tracking course progress to ensure all new first-year and transfer students have complied with this educational requirement. While we don't expect this to be an issue, it is important that you ensure your compliance by completing requirements for all three courses by the noted deadline. The course may include surveys to help personalize your experience and measure participants' attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are confidential; the school will only receive information about the participant group as a whole and will never see individual answers.
IMPORTANT NOTE: A $250 non-compliance fee will be assessed directly to students who do not fully comply with course requirements by the indicated deadline. This is a non-negotiable non-compliance fee that will be assessed directly to your Student Account.
Course Access Information
Course access information for each course will be emailed to new students mid-July. Please watch for notification regrading course requirements via your MySandiego email. The system automatically sends new students the assignment for these four courses once the student is registered for fall courses and processed in our university system. If you have not completed the fall registration process, this will slow down your access to these courses.
New students who have completed their course registration for the fall semester will be automatically added to the training platform and given access to the required courses.
Suggested/Not Required Training: Mental Well-being for Students
Please note that you will see an additional course assigned to you in the platform titled Mental Well-being for Students. This course will equip you with the essential skills and information to navigate the stressors and emotional challenges associated with college life. In this ~60 minute online course, you will practice self-care strategies, learn how to recognize when you or your peers are in distress, and how to take action to find additional support.
Important Note: this course is not part of the annual training that USD students are required to complete. This is an optional course that is suggested for ongoing learning and additional support to our USD student community. ***With that said, many USD student leaders (including Resident Assistants, Scholastic Assistants, Commuter Assistants, and other student leaders/employees) may be required to complete this course as part of their annual training and onboarding for their specific role on campus. If this applies to you, please complete this course by the deadline communicated to you by your supervisor.
Please email studenttraining@sandiego.edu if you have further questions regarding this course.
