There are a number of scholarship and national fellowship opportunities available to students at USD across the college and all the schools, in undergraduate and graduate programs, and based on a variety of admissions criteria, such as merit and financial need.
Alice B. Hayes Memorial Science Scholarship and Research Fellowship

Candidate description
- Must be a second year or third year student at USD majoring in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics and Biophysics, and Environmental and Ocean Sciences.
- If awarded, must remain a student in one of these majors during the award period.
- Must have a grade point average at or higher than a 3.25/4.00.
- Students awarded with the Hayes research fellowship for the summer are no longer eligible to receive funding from other summer research programs such as STARBURST.
- Previous Hayes Scholarship/Fellowship recipients are ineligible to apply. Those who have applied in the past and did not receive a Hayes Scholarship are eligible to re-apply.
Purpose
June 2003 marked the grand opening of the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology, and the retirement of Dr. Alice B. Hayes, President of the University of San Diego. As part of the opening of the Shiley Center, a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Hayes was therefore established in support of students who display merit and majoring in biology, chemistry or biochemistry, environmental and ocean sciences, biophysics or physics. Students may choose to use funding from the Hayes Scholarship fund to support summer and academic year research. A committee of faculty members from the four science departments will judge applications.

Boren Scholarships

Candidate description
- Open to current students
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be at least age 18 at the time of the national application deadline
- Must be planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand
- Must be planning to study in a country of which they are not a citizen
- Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited institution of higher education located within the U.S. for the duration of their Boren Awards-funded program
- Are in inactive, non-drilling status for the duration of their Boren Awards-funded program (ROTC cadets)
Selections are affected by:
- Programs based on their duration
- The focus on intensive study of a preferred language in a preferred country
- The candidate’s field of study
Purpose
Boren Scholarships provide funding opportunities for students to study less-commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. The languages covered are Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili.

Bruce Alexander Endowed Scholarship

Purpose
In memory of USD alumnus Bruce Alexander.
The Bruce Alexander Scholarship Fund provides annual scholarships to undergraduates who have declared a major in English. The amount of each scholarship and number of recipients will vary each year. Faculty from the Department of English will meet annually in the Fall semester to select the recipient(s). Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in thier major. Funds will be awarded primarily based on merit though financial need may be a factor in consideration. This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees. Students receiving the scholarship may reapply the following year. Qualified students may also speak to the Chair for more information.

Please submit two contrasting selections. We recommend choosing at least one classical/art song (preferably in a language other than English) and one piece in English. The selection in English can be from musical theater. No other genres accepted.
Each piece should be memorized and no longer than five minutes. A live pianist is encouraged but piano-only backing tracks are acceptable.
If submitting a recorded audition, please ensure clear video and high audio quality.

Purpose
Distributions from the fund shall be used to support scholarships for undergraduate students in the college studying in the sciences with preference for students of color and minorities underrepresented in science. Funds may be used primarily for but are not limited to student research summer stipends, research employment at USD during the regular school year, student travel related to research (such as field work or research conferences), and to purchase research supplies on behalf of students.
Danvera Scholarship

Purpose
Danvera Scholarship candidates must be majoring in English, in good academic standing, and have demonstrated financial need. The Danvera Scholarship preference is for students who have exhibited leadership skills. Nominations for this scholarship comes from English faculty.
Del Dickson Scholarship

Purpose
Distributions from the Del Dickson Scholarship shall be used to provide support to undergraduate students at the College of Arts and Sciences interested in politics, law and/or public policy to perform research, take a USD administered class, and/or take advantage of an internship or other experiential education opportunity in Washington, DC. As long as the spirit of this scholarship is respected, the particular terms set forth above may be read broadly and applied flexibly, to fit contemporary circumstances and the best interests of the College of Arts and Sciences and its undergraduate students.
Dr. Joseph A. Colombo Memorial Award in Theology and Religious Studies

Purpose
In remembrance of Dr. Joseph A. Colombo, the College of Arts and Sciences has established the Dr. Joseph A. Colombo Memorial Award in Theology and Religious Studies. This monetary award will normally be given annually to a senior majoring in Theology and Religious Studies and pursuing graduate work in the field. Students must be dedicated to academic excellence, community service, and leadership. In addition to receiving the Dr. Joseph A. Colombo Memorial Award in Theology and Religious Studies, the student will have his/her name inscribed on a plaque that will be displayed prominently in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.
